Early plantings ....

Many of the plants were immature with only greenery.  We don't know the colors of most of them.  We'll transpant any that clash!

Piece by piece things got done ....

We cleaned the pathways and got the dirt off of the side areas. This is the right side beds after we planted!!

Planted .... now it just needs to grow & bloom

We are so relieved to have it planted.  Some of the plants haven't matured so we won't know the colors or true size for several weeks.

Planted ~ Thanks to our friends!

The Wishing Well Quad Gardens... The beginning .... April 2, 2010
April 2, 2010 Friday

David and I went into the gardens around noon.  We were hoping to complete the planting.   First we had to rake the beds and carry the plants out of the Parks back area out to the garden.  The gate was locked so we put them into the truck bed and drove them around.  Then we unloaded them.  yikes. We had never planted such a large area: we felt a little overwhelmed.   (but NOT discouraged)....

We got out our garden drawings and had a cup of coffee while we contemplated what to do.  We decided we needed to read the labels on the plants and put the "sizes" together.  That way we could get the shortest in the front and the tallest in the back. Then we put the colors together to coordinate the quad plots.  For placement we pulled the plants from the containers and put them on the ground where we wanted to plant them.  Then, one by one we put them in.  We started with the mature blooming plants in the middle and worked out.   It looked pretty and bright.

When we were half finished with the second planter we realized it was 5 PM and time was running short.  We decided to call our best friends, Al and Julie Abrahamsen.  Julie answered: she didn't even hesitate saying she would be right over.  She said she just needed to get her knee pads.  ( She once rescued me about 25 years ago when I was wall papering at 10 PM ..... she's the best!)  10 minutes later Julie and Al arrived carrying tools and wearing big smiles.  It was like a breath of fresh air and a burst of energy for David and I.  We were so thrilled as we had been dragging just minutes before...

Julie looked at my flower garden plan drawings (yes..she's a direction reader) and quickly accessed the plants and saw how we were laying them out.  She suggested we not put the taller plants by the back edge as they would crowd the walk way... good point.  We moved them in and put some lower plants on the edges.   It was fast and pleasant work with the four of us.  We worked until 7:30 PM ... Whew!  We beat darkness by 20 minutes or so...  It was such a huge relief to finally have it planted and it looked great!   Al took several pictures.

We have zennias, soapwort, cosmos, petunias, pansies, violas, laventeria, godetias, batchlor buttons, cennerara, gladiola, freesia, delpheniums, alyssums, lobelia, nastursiums, ranuculous, daffodils, baby's breath, columbine, stock, sweet william, osteospermum, snapdragons, coreopsis, blue star creeper, erodium, maritima and nemesia.  These are just the thirty I could remember ... there are even more planted!!!  Several of the types had different varieties represented: dwarf, bush, jumbo so there really are lots of kinds!   We'll be moving plants as they bloom to keep the colors coordinated in the beds.  They are just perky green plants now.

So..... It's started.... now we just need to keep it fertilized, deadheaded, weeded and watered over the summer.

THANK YOU, AL AND JULIE ABRAHAMSEN......
YOU ARE THE BEST OF THE BEST ! ! !
