Sequoia Park and Zoo .....
                   Bring back the glory

About us ~

Hi,  We are Sylvia and David Douglas.  We have been Eureka residents almost our whole lives.  We are in love with this area and committed to enhancing the Sequoia Park Gardens.

2008 ~ City of Eureka was forced to reduce funding

.In 2008 the funding was eliminated for the Zoo's beautiful gardens.   Prior to 2008 it boasted nearly 250 different varieties of flowers.  It was a destination for many families as the  flowers  were legendary!   There were dahlias, roses, day lilies, fuchsias, poppies, marigolds, sun flowers, sweet peas and more.

June or July 2008 ~ the year of the budget cut
Today there is little of the former flower beds.  The parks staff have been severely cut and they are unable to maintain the "annual" garden.   They maintain the many parks in the City of Eureka.  They are stretched thin with the work and the ever increasing responsibilities.

Wishing well with gabebo March 2010
We have decided to take the challenge and plant the four quads around the wishing well.  We are not professional gardeners.   We ARE people who really love Eureka, the zoo and the family atmosphere the gardens offer.

The below pictures were taken March 2010.

There are several other plots in the garden area that could be developed by motivated green thumb citizens or gardening groups.   Planting and maintaining a plot is a real commitment to the community.  It would be wonderful to get the rest of the areas re-established to their former beauty.....  ( *** The empty plots are now planted ***  Beginning August 6, 2010)

We are in need of people to help us with the day to day work.  We need people who would like to weed, deadhead flowers, plant and water.

Please also write us a message on the Guestbook ...  We love to get mail!!
